Historical Durango & Silverton Gauge Railroad

You can hear the sound of the train whistle every morning from Durango Escape! The Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, steeped in history and nostalgia, has been an enduring symbol of the American West for over a century. Originally constructed in the late 19th century to haul silver and gold ore from the San Juan Mountains, this narrow-gauge railway quickly became an essential lifeline for the mining communities of southwestern Colorado. As the mining boom waned, the railroad transitioned into a vital mode of transportation for passengers and freight, connecting remote mountain towns with the outside world.
Today, the Durango & Silverton Train stands as a testament to the perseverance and ingenuity of those early settlers, preserving the legacy of a bygone era through its meticulously restored steam locomotives and vintage railcars.
Embarking on a journey aboard the Durango & Silverton Train is not just a scenic excursion but a step back in time, offering passengers a glimpse into the rugged frontier spirit of the Old West. As the steam engine chugs along the narrow-gauge tracks, winding through spectacular canyons and alongside the rushing waters of the Animas River, riders are transported to an era of cowboys, prospectors, and pioneers. With its authentic Victorian-era coaches and open-air gondolas, the train evokes a sense of nostalgia and adventure, inviting travelers to immerse themselves in the romance of the rails. Whether it’s the captivating narration by onboard guides, the breathtaking vistas of the San Juan Mountains, or the thrill of traversing high trestles and narrow ledges, a ride on the Durango & Silverton Train is an unforgettable experience that captures the essence of the Wild West.
Not only is this train ride a unique and great family activity to do while visiting Durango in the summer…you can also book during the winter! They have a Polar Express Experience that is loved by young families every winter. How cool is that? The train ride is one of my favorite things about Durango and Silverton (besides the skiing). Be sure to not miss this amazing adventure if trains are your thing!
